Vintage photographs
Photographs are primary historical documents. A single image can record a street, a building, a ceremony or a person exactly as they appeared at one moment, which gives this material a directness that written records rarely match.
Collectors approach photographs by subject, by period, or by photographic process, and condition is judged on the print itself — fading, foxing, creasing and surface damage all affect it.
What to look at
- Subject — what the image records.
- Print condition — fading, spotting, creases and edge wear.
- Size and mount — whether the original mount survives.
- Markings — studio stamps or inscriptions on the reverse.
