Description

This exceptional silver tanka represents a significant piece of medieval Indian numismatic history from the Khalji Dynasty of Delhi Sultanate. Minted in 711 AH (1311 CE) under the reign of Ala al-Din Muhammad Khilji, one of the most powerful sultans of the Delhi Sultanate, this coin exemplifies the artistic and administrative sophistication of 14th-century Islamic rule in India. The tanka was the principal silver currency of the Delhi Sultanate, and this specimen bears authentic hallmarks of the Khalji period's coinage standards. Ala al-Din Khilji (1296-1316 CE) was renowned for his military conquests, administrative reforms, and monetary policies that standardized coinage across his vast empire. This historic coin carries inscriptions and iconography reflective of that transformative era. For serious collectors, this tanka offers multiple layers of appeal: historical significance as a tangible artifact from a pivotal period in Indian history, numismatic rarity given the challenges of coin preservation over seven centuries, and investment potential as authenticated medieval silver. The piece serves as both an educational resource and a valuable addition to any collection focused on Islamic numismatics, Indian history, or world coinage. --- #
