Ancient Indian coinage
Ancient coins are the oldest material in Indian numismatics and among the most historically direct: these are objects that circulated in the subcontinent long before the modern era. The earliest are punch-marked coins, struck with individual symbol punches rather than a single die, and they are followed by the issues of successive dynasties, each with its own iconography and epigraphy.
What makes this area different
- Hand-struck production — shape, weight and centring vary from coin to coin, and irregularity is normal rather than a defect.
- Surface and patina — the condition of the surface often matters more than sharpness of detail.
- Attribution — identifying the issuing authority is part of the study, and legends may be partial on any given example.
- Symbols — on punch-marked coinage the combination of symbols is the primary identifying feature.
