Collecting British India coinage
British India is one of the most systematically collectable areas in Indian numismatics, because the coinage is organised by ruler and the series are well documented. It runs from East India Company issues through the Crown period that followed 1858, taking in the reigns of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, George V and George VI before independence in 1947.
Victoria's coinage divides into two distinct groups: issues as Queen, and issues as Empress following the proclamation of 1877. The obverse legend tells you which you are looking at, and collectors usually treat them as separate series.
What to look for
- Ruler and date — the primary way the series is catalogued.
- Mint mark — coins were struck at several mints, and the mark below or beside the date distinguishes them.
- Denomination — from small copper fractions up to the silver rupee.
- Strike quality — how crisp the legend and portrait detail remain.
Condition varies widely in this material, so read each seller's grading note and study the photographs, which show the exact coin offered.
