Printing errors on banknotes
An error note carries a fault that occurred during production, which is quite different from damage picked up afterwards. That distinction is the single most important thing to understand here: a genuine printing error happened at the press, while a tear, stain or crease happened later and carries no premium.
Types you will encounter
- Missing print — part of the design absent because a printing pass was skipped.
- Misalignment — the design shifted so elements sit out of position.
- Cutting error — the sheet cut off-register, leaving uneven margins or part of a neighbouring note.
- Ink and colour faults — smears, offsets or shifted colour.
- Serial number faults — mismatched or misplaced numbering.
Every error note is individual, so the photographs matter more here than anywhere else. Look closely and read the seller's description of exactly what the fault is.
