Fancy number banknotes explained

Fancy number collecting turns ordinary currency into something scarce. The note itself may be a common denomination in common condition, but if the serial number falls into a recognised pattern it becomes a collectable in its own right. This is one of the most active areas of Indian numismatics, and the vocabulary is worth knowing before you buy.

The main patterns

  • Solid — every digit the same, such as 111111. The most sought-after pattern.
  • Ladder — digits running in sequence, such as 123456 or 654321.
  • Radar — reads the same forwards and backwards, such as 123321.
  • Repeater — a block repeated, such as 123123.
  • Low number — numbers close to 000001, where the lower the number the better.
  • Birthday and date numbers — serials that read as a memorable date.

Condition still counts. A striking serial on an uncirculated note is worth considerably more to most collectors than the same serial on a heavily circulated one, so check the grade and the photographs on each listing.
