Princely state coinage

Before integration, a large number of Indian princely states issued their own coinage. The result is one of the richest and most varied fields in Indian numismatics: hundreds of issuing authorities, several scripts, a wide range of metals and weights, and designs that reflect regional traditions rather than a single imperial standard.

Some states struck coins closely modelled on British India issues; others continued much older local traditions in design, calligraphy and denomination. Legends may appear in Persian, Devanagari or regional scripts, and dating can follow different calendar eras, which is part of what makes the area rewarding to study.

Getting started

  • Pick one state — building depth in a single state is far more achievable than collecting broadly.
  • Learn the script — even basic familiarity with the legend transforms how much you can identify yourself.
  • Expect variation — hand-struck coinage varies in centring, weight and strike quality, and that is normal for the material.
