Sultanate coinage

Sultanate coins predate the Mughals and represent the medieval period of Indian coinage. The material covers the Delhi Sultanate along with the regional sultanates that rose alongside and after it, so the field is broad in both geography and time.

This is where several conventions that later became standard were established — a regular silver denomination, legends naming the ruler, and mint and date information worked into the design. Copper and billon issues circulated alongside the silver and are usually more accessible to newer collectors.

What to expect

  • Arabic and Persian legends — the primary means of attribution.
  • Hand-struck production — irregular flans and partial legends are normal.
  • Wide date range — the sultanates span several centuries.
  • Regional variety — issues differ considerably between sultanates.
