Uncirculated and proof sets

Mint sets are produced for collectors rather than for circulation, and they come in two broad grades of finish. Uncirculated sets contain coins struck normally but handled carefully and never released into circulation. Proof sets are struck using specially prepared dies and blanks, usually with more than one strike per coin, producing sharper detail and mirror-like fields.

What matters when buying a set

  • Original packaging — the mint's case, certificate and sleeve are part of the set and affect its completeness.
  • Finish — proof and uncirculated are different products even for the same year and denominations.
  • Toning and spotting — sets stored for decades can develop surface changes; the photographs show current condition.
  • Completeness — check that all the coins listed for that set are present.

Sets are a straightforward way to acquire a year's coinage in top condition without assembling it piece by piece.
