Banknotes reward collectors in a way coins often do not: the designs are large, the printing detail is intricate, and the signatures, serial numbers and inset letters give you many different ways to organise a collection. What to look at before buying

• Paper and crispness — original body in the paper matters more to most collectors than a clean appearance alone.

• Serial number — an ordinary note can carry an extraordinary number, which is a collecting field in its own right.
• Signature and series — these place a note precisely in time and are how most catalogues are organised.
