Description
A Rare mint error 1 Rupee of the Republic of India, showing the Lion Capital of Ashoka on the obverse and the value flanked by ears of grain on the reverse. The fault is a substantial lump of raised extra metal at the bottom of the obverse, with a matching smear on the reverse, struck on a blank that was never truly round.
- Extra metal, struck through debris, roughly 6-7 mm across between 5 and 7 o'clock on the obverse.
- The same zone on the reverse is smeared, obliterating "RUPEE" and the date.
- Irregular flan: egg-shaped outline, flat edge upper left, spur lower left, rim incomplete.
- Denomination 1 Rupee; year and mint mark not legible owing to the error.
- Cupro-nickel, measured diameter about 26.5 mm.
- Condition Fine, honestly circulated, error clear to the naked eye.
- Mint: Calcutta Mint

Add a fascinating anomaly of the Republic of India coinage to your collection with this Calcutta Mint 1 Rupee error piece. Struck in durable copper-nickel, this circulation-grade coin showcases the classic Lion Capital of Ashoka motif, disrupted by a dramatic manufacturing mishap. Mint errors of this magnitude hold a revered status among numismatists because they provide a tangible glimpse into the mechanical imperfections of mid-century state mints. A collector would prize this specimen for its vivid, multi-layered mint faults—featuring a substantial raised lump of extra metal and a deeply irregular, egg-shaped flan that deviated completely from standard specifications. Graded as Fine with heavy honest wear, the coin tells a compelling story of life in circulation while retaining its striking visual anomalies. It is an ideal conversation starter and a must-have for specialized error and variety enthusiasts seeking unique aberrations from India’s prestigious Calcutta facility.
